Moose vs Elk

The moose in Sweden and the US are the same species Alces alces.
The moose in Alaska however is a different and larger subspecies--Alces alces gigas.
The explanation of why Europeans refer to moose as elk is as follows:

Alces - Latin; alce, "elk"
Moose is an Indian word meaning "eater of twigs" and tends only to be used by
North Americans to describe Alces. In Europe, Alces is usually called elk.
